Mehndi this word is from the Sanskrit word “mendhikā.” in the Hindu holy book it is described that mehndi and turmeric are healthy ingredients for a person. In earlier time It was used for only women's palms and sometimes for men, but as time passed, it is common for men also. Haldi (turmeric)as well as mehndi, are Vedic custom as a symbolic representation of the outer and the inner shine. Vedic customs are based on the idea of "awakening the inner light".


There are many types of mehndi designs such as Arabic mehndi designs, Indian mehndi designs, and Pakistani mehndi designs. Women generally prefer henna or mehndi design patterns on their hands and feet.


Tradition



Mehndi is a ceremonial art in the ancient Indian culture. It is applied during weddings - for brides. As per religious and rigor, it is used as per their tradition like in Rajasthan, the grooms select the designs for brides. While In Assam, apart from marriage, it is mostly used by unmarried women during Rongali Bihu.while In Punjab and other states during the eve like Karva Chauth wear mehndi designs.
Muslims in Afghanistan also use it as a sign of coming of age.After passing the time In the Middle East and Africa, it is common for women to apply henna to their fingernails and toenails and to their hands.

Process

Dry Henna leaves paste is usually applied on the palm or feet using a plastic cone, a paint brush or a stick. After about 15–20 minutes, the mud will dry and during this time, you can apply the mixture of lemon juice and white sugar over the henna design to remoisten the henna mud so that the henna will stain darker.  Nowadays people are used to wrapping The painted area with tissue,  plastic, or medical tape to lock in body heat, to stain darker for two to six hours, or overnight, and then removed. When first removed it is pale to dark orange in colour and gradually darkens through oxidation, within 24 to 72 hours and at last The final color is reddish brown and can last anywhere from one to three weeks depending on the quality and type of henna paste applied, as well as where it was applied on the body (thicker skin stains darker and longer than thin skin).you can  Moisturize your Mehndi with natural oils, such as olive, sesame seed, or coconut, will also help extend the lifetime of the stain..

Mehndi in Weddings

In India Hindu or Sikh weddings in many functions like pre-wedding, wedding and post wedding ceremonies. Different countries and regions of a country celebrate their different ceremonies in different ways according to their marriage customs, rituals, and culture.
According to Hindu tradition, the ceremony is held at the bride's house or at a banquet hall so on the eve of the marriage ceremony or few days before the marriage.nowadays the bride and groom attend the event together and on the occasion, a professional mehndi artist or a relative applies mehndi to the bride's hands and feet. The designs are very difficult and different from others and on brides palm is hidden within the mehndi pattern the name or initials of the groom are applied. The event generally has a celebratory festival feel to it with the women dancing and singing traditional songs and the girls wearing vivid colors such as hot pink and yellow, and the bride will make her future groom wear purple. The groom prefers jutti instead of western footwear on this eve.
In Pakistan, the Mehndi is one of the most important pre-wedding ceremonies, which is celebrated by the bride's family. In Bangladesh, the Mehndi ceremony is celebrated by both the sides from bride's side also and groom's sides also.outside of India  Mehndi ceremonies take place in Pakistan and Bangladesh amongst the South Asian community and places like Birmingham in the UK are such known hotspots for lavish Mehndi celebrations.
